Saum is the Arabic word for “fasting.” Fasting is most commonly understood as not eating or drinking for a period of time, usually for medical or religious reasons. In Islam, the act of fasting is made wajib (obligatory) on capable Muslims for 1 month in the Islamic calendar (Ramadhan) among other times, and is highly recommended during other times of the year. The fast lasts from dawn until sunset, during which time food and drink as well as other acts are forbidden.
