The Battle of Karbala took place in Karbala in present day Iraq on Muharram 10th, in the year 61 A.H. The third Imam al-Husayn and his army of less than 100 men were attacked by the Umayyad Caliph Yazid and his army of 30,000.
Imam al-Husayn and all his supporters were killed, including the Imam’s six-month-old infant son. The women and children were taken as prisoners by Yazid’s army.
The event was a defining moment for Shi’a identity and has come to represent a new awakening of Shi’a Islam as a result of Imam al-Husayn’s sacrifice.
