The Abbasid Caliphate, or the Abbasids, refers to the third of the Islamic caliphates. The Abbasid caliphate was founded by the descendants of Prophet Muhammad’s youngest uncle Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib in Kufa and later shifted their capital to Baghdad. The Abbasids ruled over the Middle East until the fall of Baghdad to the Mongols in 1258AD.
The Abbasids associated with followers of Shi’a Islam to win support from them in defeating the preceding Ummayad Caliphate.
