After the successful launch of the seminar series ‘Shi’a in the West’, CISS continued its seminary series by hosting the second event and inviting Dr. Yafa Shanneik to present her latest work entitled ‘Remembering Karbala in the Diaspora: Religious Practices of Iraqi Shi'i Women in Ireland’
The event was chaired by Haider Alkhateeb and attended by the Director General of Alsalam Foundation Sayid Fadhil Bahrululoom alongside honoured guests and researchers.
Dr. Yafa Shanneik is a lecturer at University College Cork Teaching MA Contemporary Religions, MA Contemporary Migration and Diaspora Programme alongside MA Women’s Studies. She was a post-doctoral researcher in the IRCHSS-project on Islam in Ireland, researching on Muslim women, both migrants and converts in Ireland at the same time investigating gender dynamics within the Irish Muslim community. Dr. Yafa Shanneik holds a Ph.D. from the Department of English Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Würzburg (Germany). She has published several articles on Arab migrants and their literature in Europe. The book, ‘Islam in Ireland: Past and Present’, which will be released in 2014 is of the most recent publications she has participated in writing. Her research interests include gender and Islam, migrant identities in Europe and post-colonial literature. She also holds particular interest in Feminist and modern religious movements in different Arab and European societies.
Dr Shanneik is currently undertaking ethnographic research on Muslim women in Ireland in two areas: her work on Shi'i women communities in Ireland analyses gendered Shi'i religious practices and rituals. Her other work focuses on women converts to Islam in Ireland, both of an Irish and Eastern European background. The analysis of the women’s conversion narratives and their identity constructions also considers their everyday life and their religious practices within a predominantly Catholic environment.
CISS would like to thank all those who participated and helped organise the event, with a special thank you to Dr Yafa for sharing her latest work.
